Sadly we couldn't drive back to Austin to get Nadia her morning coffee, so instead we headed to San Antonio's major historical landmark, The Alamo in the morning.
The 300 year old Alamo has at one time been a mission, a church and a military barrack, so the remaining buildings show interesting signs of how it has changed over time. The story of the battle at The Alamo is interesting, and you can understand why it is held with such pride and regard by Texans.

After another walk along the river to find a coffee for Nadia we headed about 30 mintures out of San Antonio into "Hill Country". It really is beautiful and so close to the city with small country towns and farm land. We headed to the Cascade Caverns where we took an hour long guided tour of underground caves that were created by shifting tectonic plates and the force of underground acquifers. The caves were lovely and cool, given that the weather has been very hot since we have been here. They are also home to tiny bats, albino salemanders and a particular species of frog.
During our recent walks along the river we noticed what looked to be a really nice restaurant with terraced outdoor seating that overlook the river. We booked a table for that restaurant and it certainy didn't disappoint. The service and food were all outstanding. We chatted with guests at the next table over who guessed that our accents were South African, which is a first for us. As we left we walked through another lovely historic part of downtown San Antonio, but sadly it was all shut for the day, so the plan will be to go back and visit tomorrow.
