This was just a stop over as we had an exhausting day doing the Exmouth loop. We were going to stop here and was, yet, it was just too dusty, with hardly area trees for shade.
Oh My Goodness:
This place is huge, however, it was pure red dust.
Father: Well, we are in the Great Sandy Desert!!!!
Exmouth: We stopped at the visitors centre and all they seemed to be interested in was collecting money. They didn't even have the cutesy of marking on the map where the conveniences were located.
Highlights:
Coral Bay:
In the middle of no-where, however, Wow, what an amazing place. You could virtually stand on the beautiful white sandy beach and see the coral reef. It was high tide, otherwise, I would have waded in to have a look. We walked up to the the lookout where there was a
telescope provided. Amazing place!!!
Exmouth Lookout:
It was right on top of the hill. To get there you had to drive up this amazingly long meandering road that hugged the side of the mountain. It felt like each turn you were going to 'fall off'! No other caravan was crazy enough to drive up there!!! There was a lot of information about the reef and W11 radar still in tact.
The towers: On the way to the look out were 13 long range communication system of the US Naval Communication towers. They were taller than the Eiffel Tower. They were built in 1963. The towers were, at the time, the highest man made structures in the Southern Hemisphere. In the middle of nowhere!
Emus:
The road signs around town advised drivers of Emus and their offspring wandering the street. Yeah! We saw some walking along the edge of the road.
