Road Trip 2017

Today we woke up at 6:00am and started getting ready to hit the road to New Mexico. We drove back through Grand Canyon National Park – thanks National Park Service for creating the 4th grade free pass! We saved a lot of money driving through there twice. The Grand Canyon never ceases to amaze. We ended up making three more stops on our way out of the park, feeling the need to catch just one more glimpse. The Desert View point was the most beautiful to us. We climbed to the top of the Desert View Watchtower and had great views of the Colorado River cutting through the canyon. We have now added whitewater rafting down the Colorado to our bucket list.

We finally got back on the road and headed to Four Corners. The drive there was quite an experience! We are now keeping a list of the worst roads in America. We drove through the lands of the Navajo Nation which were the worst roads so far.

Arizona itself was not as expected. It has a much more diverse terrain than we have ever seen before. We have really only experienced the desert terrain, but Arizona goes from rocky deserts with little, spaced out bushes to National Forests, to areas of huge red rocks protruding out of the ground. So cool!

We arrived at Four Corners, stood in line in the hot sun, and took our pictures in four states at once.

Then, we began our last leg of the journey to Albuquerque along more awful roads with gusty winds. When Sydney saw the Welcome to New Mexico sign that said “The Land of Enchantment,” she said, “The land of enchiladas?” We cracked up and said, “You can probably find enchiladas here too.”

We were looking forward to getting to our RV park, and making a home cooked meal for dinner. The route we took to Albuquerque was not much to write about. Pretty barren land out there! We realized along the way that we were going to get to our campsite too late to make the dinner we planned, so we started to look for a place to eat. We ended up in the town of Grants. We wanted to stop at a local burger place to get a quick bite, and looked up one that seems like a good spot. We drove through the town and it seemed like we were driving in Old Mexico rather than New Mexico. We got to the spot where the burger place was, and it was closed. SO…..we headed back down the road and stopped at Sonic instead (ick!). At this point, we just wanted to get some food in our stomachs and get to the RV park.

At about 9:45pm, we finally pulled into our spot. We decided we didn’t care to do anything except plug in the power and go to bed. Those extra stops pushed us back, but we don’t regret it. This was just a LONG day!!
