2 WEEKS IN!
Today, we had a short drive (only 3.5 hours), and we just wanted to get out of Macon and into Savannah. So, we unplugged and headed out at about 7:00am. We made no stops along they was as Stacy wanted as much time as possible in Savannah.
We arrived at our RV park, and got an Uber into the historic district. We went straight to the Visitor’s Center to buy tickets for the Trolley Tour that would give us an overview of the city, so we could decide where to spend the rest of our time. We went with Old Savannah Tours because they gave the history of stops on the tour and sometimes costumed people would pop on and give us the history instead. It was really fun to learn about the city that way. We didn’t get Forrest Gump on our tour, but we did get four others: Matilda Sorrel, who is said to still haunt her house to this day, a Union soldier, who killed and was killed by his brother in an argument over slavery (his brother was a confederate soldier), an African woman who spoke Gullah so you could only really understand a tiny bit of what she was saying, and Mary Telfair, an independently wealthy woman who established the art centers in Savannah in the 1800s. All of the actors did a great job.
The tour took us around some of the most beautiful squares we have ever seen! Each one had huge oak trees with hanging moss and were surrounded by old mansions or row houses. Incredible! We hopped off our tour to eat lunch at the Pirate’s House, which is decorated as such and was inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
When we were done with the tour, we decided to walk over to City Market. Here we were able to see taffy being made and sampled a fresh piece. They also made pecan praline, so we had to sample that too! SO good! We wandered through more shops, a cookie place (more samples!), and then decided we’d find a place to get peach cobbler to go so we could eat it after dinner. (We’re on vacation!) We went to Paula Deen’s Lady & Sons Restaurant to get the peach cobbler. Then, we couldn’t quite leave Savannah yet. It was just too amazing to leave. So, we went to the Savannah Bee Company and Stacy and the girls did a honey tasting. Very interesting, which led to a few purchases. We then wanted to wander through some of the squares we had passed on our tour. First stop- Chippewa Square – where the famous bench scenes from Forrest Gump were filmed. The bench is no longer there, but Stacy took a picture in the place where it once was. We walked down Jones Street – voted most beautiful street in America many times.
It started to POUR on us as we were walking around, and we got totally soaked. But, we didn’t care. It was kinda like Hawaii. But as soon as the rain stopped, it was SO HUMID!!! Oh, and we found out that’s actually the WORST time to be walking around because that’s feeding frenzy time for mosquitos!!!! We were eaten alive! Now, we cared and got an Uber back to our RV. Probably good anyway since it was already 6:30pm and we needed to start making dinner – inside tonight!! We warmed up the cobbler, and it was so gross! What’s up Paula Deen? We thought you’d be a sure bet! Oh well.
