Road Trip 2017

Today, we woke up early again to get on the road to Boston. We had a surprise stop for the girls today, so we knew we would eat up some time stopping there.

Oh, but wait! Scott found out that Jim Croce is buried on our route today, so we had to stop, of course! We drove to the cemetery, and then Scott had all of us spread out to start looking for the grave marker. We wandered around in wet grass in our flip flops looking. After a little while, the guard drove up on his golf cart and asked who we were looking for. Scott told him, and then he pointed us in the right direction. Then, we were back on our route.

Since the girls have been such Hamilton fanatics, we planned to stop in Weehawken, New Jersey at the spot where Alexander Hamilton had the duel with Aaron Burr that ended his life. It is also the same area where his son Phillip lost his life in a duel as well. The girls thought this stop was pretty neat. We snapped way too many pictures, and then headed to Connecticut.

We ended up spending about an hour trapped in New York. We tried SO MANY WAYS to get back onto the freeway, but every entrance said CARS ONLY, so we could not drive the RV on those roads. We had our first flare up of personalities today!! Everyone yelled at someone at some point on our drive. Scott and Stacy were increasingly frustrated with how in the world we were going to get out of New York. Never wanted to get out of a place more than today! We even tried to find a police station to ask for help, but that wasn’t happening either. When we FINALLY found our way out, Scott played the song, “New York’s Not My Home.” Perfect song for today!

Scott had a lunch stop planned for us in New Haven at a place called Louis Lunch. This is the place where the hamburger was invented. This was a really small place, and was true to it’s roots. There are very few options. You can choose cheeseburger or hamburger. Then, you can choose to have tomatoes or onions or not. That’s it! We loved a sign on the wall that said, “This is not Burger King. You will get your food my way, or you won’t get a damned thing.” Stacy wants to hang this sign in her kitchen! They know what they’re doing. These hamburgers were DELICIOUS! The guys working behind the counter were hilarious. They bantered back and forth razzing each other the whole time.

Then, we drove through Rhode Island to get to Boston to see one more state for the day. We were able to drive through Rhode Island in an hour – it really is a very small state!

We finally arrived in Boston at about 8:00, packed a bag for a planned hotel stay, and decided we wouldn’t eat locally tonight. We just wanted to be done for the day, so we ate at Chipotle – Scott was very happy – and called it a day!
