1. Mango tree (Ipanema) - 2.5/5, helpful staff, good location and good breakfast. Bad smell, poor wifi and in comfy beds!
2. Walk on the beach (Copacabana), 4/5 , helpful staff, good location, good wifi, poor breakkie and beds.
3. Casinhas Bergamota, Ilha Grande, 4/5, own kitchen, great location, value for money, beds bit hard
Things to do in Rio
1) hike to Christ the Redeemer if you want a challenge, it takes about 1.5 hours from the Botanic gardens (get public bus).
2) Walk the lagoon (7/8km)
3) go to Ilha Grande for a few days ( you can't really predict the weather!)
4) Sunset at sugar loaf (bring student card for 50% discount)
5) Favela tour is good if you want to see the Rio tourists can't!
6) the walking tour is ok, ends at the Salerno steps, so worth it.
Things we learnt
1) bring bug spray, mossies are awful in Rio
2) weather in Rio is hard to predict
3) get the morning ferrys to Ilha Grande, much calmer
4) try get to a football match in Rio, organised through hostel
5) taxis are cheap so easier than buses if you have the numbers
6) Frontera and Opium are good restaurant in Ipanema
7) They love serving cake for breakfast in Brazil!
