Family Europe Trip, June-August 2018

Triglav has an elevation of 2863.65 metres and it is the highest mountain in Slovenia and the highest peak of the Julian Apls.

Climbing Mt. Triglav has been our dream for a long time. Well Sini’s and mine. We planned, stayed fit and prepared ourselves mentally to be able to attempt this difficult hike. Our backpacks were packed, kids were ready and we commenced our walk to the Alps on the 18/07 at 0715 from Trenta-Zadnjica. The start was pretty steady with slight elevation and walking in the forest and between residential houses for about 1 hr. Kids were happy singing, dancing and observing. As we completed our walk in the forest we reached mountains paths with only cliffs to the right of us. So, narrow path but easy to walk on. As the walk went on, the steeper the elevation. The views were magnificent! After many, many stops for food, drinks and resting legs we reached Dolic hut where people either rest, have a drink before moving on or sleep at the hut. We stopped to rest, eat and have a more drink before our attempt to reach Mt. Triglav. So, our walk began again. We walk, our legs fatigue but our body was on fire with excitement of seeing Mt. Triglav closer and closer. And finally our time has come. We were just under the mountain ready to climb the last hour. We put on our safety gear and our helmets ready to concur the crazy looking mountain. After 200m of climbing Luka got height fright. He was shaking, pale and crying. Poor boy froze in one spot and couldn't move. After calming him down we decided to go back down and abandon the hike. Luka was helped down by a guide who was amazing at bringing Luka back down. We sat down for 30 before descending down to Dolic Hut. We initially booked another hut but for us to go there would take us another 3 hours. We were lucky enough to score accommodation at Dolic Hut as it was super busy. My Australian smooth talk must of helped. He he he. Our hike took 7 hr with only 24.5 kms of walking. The elevation we reached was around 2550. So we were not far from reaching the top, but that was the most difficult part of it all. It was pretty scary.

We are super proud of our two kids who even attempted to walk with us the distance and elevation that they did. They have learn alot along the way and saw some beautiful sceneries. They are strong, determent and great kids.

Would we do it again? Good question. give us 6 months to think about it. Kids said “NO”.
