Pompeii is a vast archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region, near the coast of the Bay Of Naples. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city.Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79A.D. The preserved site featured excated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can freely explore. And the ruins is what we saw today. WOW.
Amazing to see such history. We hired the voice recorders which gave us great information on different parts of the ruins. The hardest and most difficult part of the ruins we had to walk through was Amphitheater of Pompeii. This is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheater. It is the large, circular open air venue with raised seating. Seating 20,000 spectators. They were used for events such as gladiator combats, animal slayings and executions. Around 59 AD, a deadly brawl occurred between Pompeiians and residents of Nuceria during games in the amphitheater, resulting in 10 year ban on such events. A lot of blood and was shed in there which gave us goose bumps.
Another amazing site was where the rich lived and the facilities they had eg. pool, steam room, spa baths and gym. In those days this would have been Out of most of the peoples reach and only a DREAM!!!.
Overall this was a great education for everyone. During our walk we had rain, thunder and lightning. We hid in a little cave...literally! we are not sure what the area was used for in those days! Very small!
