Balkans and Latin America

From Arequipa we headed to the next level - the lake Titicaca at 3800 meters altitude. The night bus ride was a very pleasant experience despite the rain and the curvy road - the bed-like seats made it easy to travel. We arrived to a rainy and quite uninteresting Puno which though had one major advantage - it is situated on the shore of the lake Titicaca. The stay in a very beautiful hotel by the lake could have been a highlight of the trip if only the altitude sickness had let us enjoy it.

Puno

From Arequipa we headed to the next level - the lake Titicaca at 3800 meters altitude. The night bus ride was a very pleasant experience despite the rain and the curvy road - the bed-like seats made it easy to travel. We arrived to a rainy and quite uninteresting Puno which though had one major advantage - it is situated on the shore of the lake Titicaca. The stay in a very beautiful hotel by the lake could have been a highlight of the trip if only the altitude sickness had let us enjoy it.

After a calm first day on the altitude and liters of coca leaf tea we finally were fit for discovering the lake's magic. First stop was the floating islands Uros, where people still live on small islands made of the local plant totora, which apart from being the construction material is used for all other possible needs including food. The people living on the islands wear traditional clothes and earn their daily bread by exchanging goods and making souvenirs for tourists. However, their children do go to school and universities and they have access to basic public services.

The next stop was the island Taquile that is said to be the birthplace of potato and quinoa. There are no cars on the island, and local population still wears traditional clothes every day and earns their bread mainly by textile handicraft.
