Balkans and Latin America
After the desert heat of Ica we headed uphill, to the beautiful city of Arequipa. The plane brought us to the altitute of 2500 meters, we felt the soroche (altitude sickness) almost immediately as it made our breath heavy already after several steps. Luckily, there was coca tea available everywhere and it seemed to help, at least the Placebo effect did its job.
The city is very beautiful, aspecially as a contrast to the moderately ugly Lima and Ica. The colonial heritage can be seen in the architecture, and the local monastery is definitely worth visiting.

The plane brought us to the altitute of 2500 meters, we felt the soroche (altitude sickness) almost immediately as it made our breath heavy already after several steps. Luckily, there was coca tea available everywhere and it seemed to help, at least the Placebo effect did its job.
The city is very beautiful, aspecially as a contrast to the moderately ugly Lima and Ica. The colonial heritage can be seen in the architecture, and the local monastery is definitely worth visiting.
We found many interesting and funny details in the city that made our stay even more pleasant - crazy young men doing jongleur tricks in the middle of the road, a trash car announcing its arrival with the theme from the Little Murmaid, a love poem to the potato ("papa" in Latin America so valued by the local population and giving them so much pride) to name a few.
