Rila, Bulgaria

One last mini-trip before coming back to Sweden and some quality time with the family! First stop was the Rila monastery founded in the 10th century in the Rila mountains.

The second stop was the cave of Ivan Rilski, the monk who lived in the 9th century and who founded the monastery. The last years of life he spent in the cave in the Rila mountains. After a nice hike in the forest we were finally there. The cave is tiny, cold, dark and has nothing more than one stone "bed", it's hard to believe someone could live there. In the deep corner of the cave you can see a small glimpse of light coming from above. It is a small passage that you have to climb to get out of the cave. The legend says you cannot pass it if you are a sinner. I did pass ;)

The last stop we made on the way back was the village Stob. The village itself is not very special, but a 30 minutes hike up to the mountain leads you to a beautiful view. This part of the mountains resembles pyramids and has been shaped for ages by the wind and rain. The shape is changing constantly due to the work of the wind and earthquakes. Some pyramids break, other appear. Several pyramids have big heavy stones on the top which makes them look like mashrooms. The picturesque landscape around the place only adds up to its beauty.
