JoAnne and Kevin's Southern Road Trip

On my first trip to New Orleans about 20 years ago, I got to see it rain sideways. Today, it was simply torrential. This system was so big, the French Quarter Festival for Saturday (when many thousands would have attended) was cancelled by Friday night. It was good that they did, since lightning was all around. So, those who scheduled expensive hotel rooms months in advance had to find other things to do.

Our strategy was to check out a few stores and take refuge in St. Louis Cathedral when things got real bad. See below: one of the ceiling frescoes.

When the rain let up a bit, we did the other logical thing and headed to Café Beignet for coffee and beignets. They come three to an order and are not taken from a shelf. They are cooked up for you on the spot and delivered hot to the table, covered with powdered sugar. If there is anything in this world worth the risk of getting zapped by a New Orleans thunderbolt, it would be Café Beignet beignets. Perfection.

Later, we drove to Baton Rouge in a total downpour.
