JoAnne and Kevin's Southern Road Trip

The skies cleared beautifully today, but were again accompanied by wind and chills that had us back in the Iceland windbreakers. Incredible. But it was beautiful, so we started the day down by the Baton Rouge waterfront. Aside from being the state capital, it is a huge port on the Mississippi River. The shot below is from their waterfront.

We could not put together a bayou tour due to timing, yesterday's weather, and washouts from the flood of 2016. So we continued on to our next stop, the antebellum city of Natchez, MS.

This city has more pre Civil War mansions than any other city in the Mississippi River valley, since they did not put up any resistance to the Union forces that took over. Like Charleston, Natchez amassed its fortune with a strong port, supported by slave labor. And like Charleston, it was the original state capital, so there are relics from that era as well.

We spent our time in Natchez touring some of the best preserved homes. Many of them are working inns and B&B, so you could stay in the ultimate of antebellum charm. Times being what they are, we opted for the Comfort Inn in Jackson, MS.
