JoAnne and Kevin's Southern Road Trip

This is an unusual park. It runs along the spine of the Shenandoah mountain range, providing wonderful views to the east and west when weather permits. For most people, the park is 105 miles long and about 300 feet wide, since they simply drive the parkway (known as Skyline Drive) that runs along the top, enjoying the views at its many turnouts. When it is foggy (like it was yesterday and this morning), it seems to be about 50 feet wide.

However, the park has many hiking trails leading to a variety of nice waterfalls. This was a good option for us today, and we hiked to Dark Hollow Falls. We were the only ones there for the most part, and the falls were running strong with all of the recent rain.

The other oddity about this park is that all of the hikes from Skyline Drive are canyon style hikes. That is, you go downhill to start, and do your climbing on the way back. This could be troublesome for some folks. But with JoAnne carrying my backpack on the way back up, I found it quite easy.

The skies cleared in the afternoon and we finally got some great views from Skyline Drive. We then started to make our way home in the interest of avoiding an extremely long drive home tomorrow. Thus, we are in Chocolate Town, USA for our last night.
