According to folklore, descendants of today's wild ponies of Assateague swam to the island from the shipwreck of a Spanish galleon back in the 17th Century. Today, they provide one of the most unique nature viewing opportunities in the United States, Every July, the Virginia herd of about 200 ponies is rounded up to swim over to Chincoteague Island, where all but 10 of the 50 or 60 newborns are auctioned off to the throng of onlookers.
