JoAnne and Kevin's Southern Road Trip

We went to see another old friend today. Bracing for the masses on pilgrimage to Graceland, we were pleasantly surprised to find the crowd far below capacity. Nonetheless, we quickly had to navigate one of the world’s greatest tourist attractions and its various admission plans. We opted for admission to the mansion, the grounds, and the complex of exhibits known as the Elvis Experience … which included his cars, motorcycles, performance regalia, gold records, report cards, and gift shops with every conceivable Elvis souvenir. We declined the private planes, VIP line, and some type of a meal. With our senior discounts, it ran $122 for two vs. about $250 for the full deal.

Despite all the hoo-hah of Graceland, we both found a connection there and, on a couple of occasions, were a little emotional. To see how this young guy, from humble beginnings, rose to levels of stardom never known before, and got caught up in the fastest pace that life could ever throw at a human being, so that he collapsed and died at the age of 42 is still very sad. Listening to his incredible voice as you walk away from the gravesite is quite moving … until they ask you to pay another $35 for the picture they took of you on the way in. We told them maybe next time …

We finished the day on Beale Street with brisket, barbecue and The Blues. What a magical place.
