Savannah was already a place where people wanted to go. Why wouldn't they? Like Charleston, it was an historic southern city. Savannah is also a beautiful town set out on a grid in the 1700's by James Oglethorpe. It has 24 squares each with a unique fountain or statue, adorned by massive oak trees and Spanish moss.
But interest in Savannah increased when restorationist Jim Williams was tried four times for the shooting death of his assistant and gay lover, Danny Hansford. The shooting took place in their home, The Mercer-Williams House, a home formerly owned by the legendary Johnny Mercer, who wrote the great ballad, Moon River.
Interest in Savannah increased again when the story was retold in the 1994 John Berendt book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. At the center of that interest for visitors was the statue of the Bird Girl in Bonaventure Cemetery with its now famous picture on the cover of the book. So many people came to Savannah to find the Bird Girl, they eventually had to move it to a local museum ... where we caught up with her today.
