We finished our drive of the Outer Banks today. Of the three main islands that make up the Outer Banks, perhaps the most remarkable is Hatteras Island. As these narrow barrier islands bend away from the mainland, the furthest distance is reached near Cape Hatteras Light, more than 20 miles offshore. It is a remote area, with miles and miles of empty beaches and sand that shifts with every major storm. As the shore around the Cape Hatteras light (the tallest light in North America) was eroding away, in 1999 the 4,800 ton structure was moved a half mile inland, the largest lighthouse move ever completed.
