JoAnne and Kevin's Southern Road Trip

Again the rainy skies cleared beautifully, but it was another day in sweaters and windbreakers. Gotta get warmer soon ...

After mass this morning, we walked the historic district of Charleston for several hours. This is a good size city and the historic district is a very large area. There are countless public buildings that have been restored to their original grandeur and even more private homes. The city of Charleston was built on its harbor and shipping business ... and was the primary port for the slave trade in the South. Much of the wealth of sea captains, traders and plantation owners was based on slavery. So, we saw that side of things throughout the historic district.

But later in the day we saw the other side at Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. The National Park ranger gave a great talk about the war and the necessity to end slavery and preserve the union. Lowering the flag and folding it up with several visitors was a stirring end to a great day.
