South Africa

After breakfast we went out for a walk on a mission to find a fresh crayfish for dinner. We visited the Crayfish Wharf & the fish market but no luck, the fish market was no longer a fish market but housed a couple of cafes, gift shops, gallery & tourist information. I asked in the tourist information & the lovely lady turned round & looked out the window & said “it doesn’t look like the boats went out as it’s too rough, if they go out they are back about 11am”, there was 2 boats outside, I thought there may have been more.
We then went onto the beach & walked along at the waters edge & I spent a while taking photos & watching we think the chef from Wolfgat foraging on the rocks, we think for mussels. We then watched some windsurfers make their way out through the surf after they’d been on the beach waiting for quite a time.
It was really windy making for some great spray photos.
We made our way off the beach & back into the village buying spelt rye sourdough bread from junk & disorderly for lunch.
We had ham, salad & the bread for lunch & then I started the washing. We’d chosen a few places to stay because they had washing facilities, this being 1 of them. We arrived to a padlock & chain on the washing machine & when I re-checked their airb&b listing the washing facilities available had been removed. We’re not sure why but guess it’s because Paternoster has water restrictions, as does a lot of South Africa at the moment. A large number of public toilets either only have 1 or 2 taps that work or none at all & we are asked to use hand sanitiser rather than soap & water.

As we are heading to Paarl next & staying at a winery I wanted to get the washing done, the cottage contains a lovely stone bath, which due to the water restrictions we were asked not to use, this was perfect for my washing .... I did the darks in the bath & luckily we had 2 basins in the bathroom, the lights in the 2 sinks & I eventually got everything washed & out onto the line drying.
Tonight we are booked at a restaurant at the Crayfish Wharf which is advertising fresh Crayfish.
We had a lovely meal at the Hungry Monk, salmon blinis to share for entree, fresh Crayfish with avocado salad for main with a side dish of noodles & tart tartan with ice cream for dessert, delicious.
