Happy Easter, everyone! Today, I woke up bright and early to go to Sunday mass at the giant cathedral in the center of town. It was a very interesting experience. It made me remember all of the countless times I went to church when I was little. There were many similarities, such as the rituals, the prayers, and way the mass was run.
However, there were many differences that I did not expect. I remember wearing a bright, pastel dress every year. So, I wore a gray dress to church and hoped I wasn't underdressed. That wasn't the case at all. People were wearing jeans, coats, and scarves; nothing at
all the signify that the Lord is Risen. I mean, in their defense, they were probably smart for doing so because the inside of the church was freezing. It was definitely colder than outside.
Another difference was the singing. I think there were probably thirty minutes of just song! I do not remember church being like that when I went.
And finally, the attitude of the people was altogether much more somber. People weren't smiling, laughing, or even talking; not even before mass had started. My friend and I were talking before the priests had even entered, and we got shushed and dirty looks!
Yet, it was a very interesting experience, and definitely one that had to happen at least once during my time here.
After church, we went across the street to an Irish pub, hoping to get some hot chocolate to warm us up. It was delicious! We also decided to stay for brunch. Mine was yummy and I got so much food! I could hardly stand when I was done.
Overall, it was a pretty good Easter Sunday, even though I wasn't with my loving and crazy family.
