GETTING OUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66

Well not quite a song title but definitely a well known chorus. Woke up this morning and headed for our complimentary breakfast that we didn't realise we could have had yesterday... Lovely I had what seemed to be baked scrambled egg with cheese a bit of tomato and hot chilli with crispy bacon and toast whilst Donna opted for the safer option crispy bacon cheese boiled egg and toast. The sun is out and looks like it could warm up again later despite the dodgy forecast. Well prepared for another long day at the wheel after all it's 70 miles to Albuquerque lol. A really straight forward drive. On hitting Albuquerque we parked up and thought we would have a look around, we saw an information board and were trying make some sense of it when a guy came over and asked what we were looking for we asked if there was an information centre but he said not really but all the districts were on the board he would suggest the old town first, allegedly you can get a decent Margarita down there and it was only 7 blocks down the road. Well we thought we'd give that a go. Realising we had only put an hour on the meter we thought we would

have a quick walk around the couple of blocks. We are in the Justice Area....3 Huge Courthouses on 3 Corners of an intersection. Albuquerque Courthouse, New Mexico State Courthouse and The United States Courthouse. Just around the corner The Police Dept. and The Sheriff's Dept share a building opposite The state Correction Facility. Think we had better behave ourselves.
Well back in the car and looking for Old Town, talk about frustrating. I think the Old Town must be playing hide and seek with the English tourists. We drive round and round up and down to no avail. Eventually we decide we will go to the 66 Diner it looks easy to find...... If only I could stay in the right lane! But my internal compass worked for once and despite starting a way off we soon got back to where we wanted to be. The Diner was amazing the staff in 50's/60's style uniform with ribbons in their hair if it was long, all period music, Mum and Dad you could have sat in here for hours Big Girls

Don't Cry and Ally Oop to name a couple of tunes, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe posters and memorabilia. This was just like an episode of Happy Days. Bizarrely inside the gents cubicle were two large Marilyn Monroe posters mmmm interesting. Donna had an Ice Cream Soda and I had a Strawberry Shake Donna also ordered a Hamburger. The Ice Cream Soda and the Shake were like a meal in themselves so Donna was very pleased when the burger was brought out cut in half on two separate plates.
Well it's certainly turned out nice again it's 85F when we go back out to the car. Obviously refreshed we had another go at finding the Old Town but only after we visited a huge Trading Post specialists in authentic Native American goods.....shopping shocker! On from there wallet a little lighter we found The Old Town, it has come out of hiding and is keen to be looked at. The Old Town was founded in 1706 When a Spanish Governor from Bernanillo 18 miles away led 12 Families, a Franciscan Friar with a escort of 9 soldiers settled here. It looks fantastic the only issue is it's almost solely shops but then there was The Rattlesnake Museum that has also got a sizeable.... shop. We didn't see a bar to get Donna a Margarita but never the less we both enjoyed it around here. Question.... is the TV series Breaking Bad based around here because there is lots of merchandise? Well onto our home for the night Best Western Plus Executive Suites, well the room is nice, beer is on ice and it's still early in the evening. 140 miles to Gallup tomorrow. Oooops must have forgotten the Sun Lotion my

head looks a bit like a tomato from the top.
