GETTING OUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66

Well the biggest drive of the trip so far 350 miles so up at 6am an early breakfast, omelette sausage patty and toast with the obligatory plastic plates lol. Then a quick chat with Elle and we are off. It is still raining heavily with occasional thunder and lightning....The drive at first is hard it's still dark because of the rain and the cars on the road at this time all seem to know exactly where they are going and are in a rush to get there. I get on the wrong road and to corr ect this I end up on a Toll Road we are on it for about 5 miles and costs us a whole 25 cents.
Eventually we find our way back onto the Mother road and the sun comes out. The temperature soon rises from its low today of 74F and is quickly up to 85F. First stop proper today is Arcadia and more precisely the round barn an informative visitor centre and a great story of renovation. Well back on the road and the temperature is still rising we see a new icon on the road POPS with its huge soda bottle and straw it doesn't look too much during the day but looks fantastic when illuminated at night, if the pics are to be believed. more fuel $15 this time.
We pass through some great open country and I bag my first roadkill. Sorry but I couldn't avoid the 5 or 6 foot greenish snake that was slithering across the road it was still flipping when I looked in my rear view. Eventually we hit Clinton and visit the Route 66 Museum some good info some great exhibits and a good story not bad for $5 it has the added bonus of being next door to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol so some State Trooper Vehicles... Not massively cool vehicles though. It's 99F as we move on according to the huge sign across the road and the cars thermometer hovered there for a while but didn't hit three figures.
Back on the road and the next target is Elk City we manage to get to the 2nd museum at just about 4.25pm so we haven't time to see it all budget entry to 2 of the museums on the complex for Just $3 each. The complex is great loads of old buildings you can go in if only we had arrived earlier.. But you can't do it all. Carrying on down the road we pass through many small towns again some businesses just abandoned and it's amazing to see that people are still living in what appear to be derelict Motels. One of the last towns in Oklahoma is Shamrock with it's Blarney Inn I am sure it was around here we left The Arapaho and Cheyenne Nations. Thats 5 Nations of Native Americans in two days after the Oqpah, Miami and Cherokee nations we went through yesterday.
Rolled onto Texas and eventually hit Amarillo we passed the Big Texas Ranch home of the 72Oz Steak Challenge, originally we were due to stay here and we had promised ourselves a drink here to see if anyone was taking up the challenge but after 12 hours behind the wheel we really wanted to get checked in to our hotel. We were looking for a Walmart....other large American supermarkets are available... so we could just have a roll and some ham or something and a couple of cold beers. Alas we couldn't find one which turned out to be a right result. We checked into the Courtyard Downtown Amarillo at 8.15 pm. We got our room sorted and then checked out the in house menu it wasn't inspiring and as usual for a hotel seemed expensive as well, luckily enough Acapulco was just across the road, a Mexican restaurant not the town, so we went loco. We were really lucky as they had live Mexican music being performed for the entirety of our visit...another tick on Donna's wish list for the trip, sit in a bar with live local music, well swap bar for restaurant and boom, I mean in Texas it is either going to be country or Mexican. A great meal a great atmosphere let's hope for a great nights sleep.... Only 270 miles tomorrow.
