Well today is the day for our Grand Canyon helicopter trip... Up early it's down to freezing outside, well we are over 6000 feet above sea level. Donna really doesn't want us to be late. We really can't be bothered to go out for breakfast so it's a repeat of last night's dinner but swapping beer for tea and leaving the crisps out. Fed and watered we popped over to see the concierge to make sure we will be alright for the flight despite being unable to confirm yesterday, he assures us we will be fine and gives us the directions when we get to the Airport. We need to be there for check in at 9.35am for our 10.15am flight so Donna insists we are there for 9am!! I am sure the guy who checked us in thought that our eagerness to be there was very funny. Grand Canyon Resort, Tusayan
The time
went by quickly and soon our pilot Patrick was introducing himself and giving us our safety spiel. He then announces that Donna is the co-pilot with another couple in the front whilst I sit in the row behind with another couple of guys. The flight was fantastic flying over the forest at 120 mph seemed quite slow, and when we dropped the speed to 100mph over the canyon it felt like we had almost stopped. The sky was blue and there was no wind so conditions were perfect for us. After about 10 mins, or so it seemed the pilot informed us we would be landing in a couple of minutes. On checking the time we have had over 45 mins. I can't really describe how we both felt about what we had experienced Awesome just doesn't seem adequate. Well we went back to our hotel so Donna could sort our cases whilst I got the car sorted. Well Donna was successful and got the cases sorted but allegedly because I can't collect the car till tomorrow they can't hold a car till tomorrow..... so I have to phone again in the morning!
Next we had to find out what to do to get to the canyon itself and what it costs. With that sorted and our park pass purchased, $30 for 7 days we catch the free shuttle to the visitor centre and then spend the day on and off the very frequent free shuttle busses taking you from view point to view point. It was a very sunny day and the temperature got to just over 80f. We spent a bit of time in the Visitor Centre but a majority of our time gazing into one of the most interesting and impressive natural sights I have ever seen. Words can't express what you actually see and the size of the Canyon is almost impossible to put into perspective, photos simply don't do it justice.....didn't stop us taking hundreds of them though lol. Well as time got past 4 pm the shuttles became more and more packed as everybody wants to get to a viewpoint to see the sunset and that's exactly what we did. The sun dropped very quickly behind the north rim...well worth watching but the pictures again dont really capture it. Immediately after sunset we rushed to catch the next shuttle to eventually connect with the resort shuttle. Well we got back to Tusayan about 7.45 pm and decided to go
to Wendy's for some tea. halfy halfy for a change, The Baconator and Spicy Chicken Burgers, very tasty. Then back to our room for showers and bed. Up at 5 tomorrow to see the sunrise.
