Working with Pongo

Today on our trek we had to walk over several logs across streams. We have done that before, but there were quite a few in a row today, and they aren't my favourite thing. James is so sweet – he always escorts us across, sometimes with a large stick prodded in the water for balance, and we hold hands in a long line and shuffle across. He started humming a little tune to himself about walking across the log, which we have all adopted. It's so funny, although it probably makes the process more difficult in the long run. On the approach to one log, Steph stepped down the muddy bank and her whole foot disappeared into the mud up to over her knee- and James tried to grab her and she nearly took him down with her – I don't know how he kept his balance. Her gumboots have this habit of really suctioning into the mud, so it wasn't easy to extract her, especially when we were all cracking up laughing. Few leeches in my boot and one on the back of my shirt today, but nothing major.

It is Amoy's birthday tomorrow, so we got her a sketchpad (which April decorated with photos of her and us) and a piece of cake – we all went outside the rest house and sang to her and she got super embarrassed!
