Back with the babies again this morning – I had forgotten how small they are compared to the others. Ospie has diarrhoea, so there was quite a mess under her cage. Maohun decided to down his milk at record speed today, and ended up having to spit it out before launching into a coughing fit. He had managed to dribble milk all down his face and chest in the process. Kala was hanging around this morning getting in the way. As we were trying to lock away the rubbish bag (which is full of all the leftover fruit and shit from under the babies cages - and I literally mean shit) he tried to snatch it and run off with it. Knowing he would have made a proper mess, I had to hold on tight and try and get him to let go. After a bit of a struggle, and multiple rips in the bag, I finally won, and all he managed to get was a small piece of the plastic – phew.
I took out Bakut and Koko this morning. Sepilok did his usual stunt of returning back to us almost as soon as he was sent out to climb, and it was exhausting trying to lift him and encourage him back out (even with three of us). At one point he came back when only I was there, and was determined to cling to my leg. It was such a struggle to get him to let go of me and the fence post – but eventually he went back out on the ropes. Tiger was making a lot of noise this morning, as Yokmil was close by in the forest apparently, although we didn't actually see him. We have some VIPs visiting this afternoon, so I'm sure that will be interesting! We gave everyone a carrot before we left, which they all completely decimated. Bakut decided he would just work his way around it, biting off huge chunks and dropping them on the floor, until he had whittled it down to a chunk he was happy to eat.
In the afternoon we only took out Alagu, Bakut and Archie, as they are the best climbers for the cameras. Having said that, Archie struggled to get going, and kept trying to wrap his arms around me. The VIPs paid a visit – there were about 20 people, mostly dressed in white shirts and black trousers, as well as a cameraman. Ibri said she thought they had something to do with the tourism board. The vet was explaining the rehabilitation process and then one of the men repeated something very similar to the camera. The only stayed for around ten minutes, before heading over to see the elephants. I escorted Archie out and back today, he was very well behaved, and always likes to suck his thumb along the way. Turns out the visitor was the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, who was there to gain an understanding of the work undertaken by the Wildlife Rescue Unit.
