Working with Pongo

Time for outdoor nursery again. A fairly uneventful day. Our shifts generally run from about 8.15am – 11/11.30am and 2.15pm till 4/4.30pm, so we have a lot of downtime. Today Bidu Bidu joined the group – he had an injury, so has been in the clinic for a week, but we walked him back to join the nursery today. He has a very different face to the others, so I find it really easy to tell him apart.

As soon as we reached the cages inside, he decided to make a run for it and was hanging from the roof. Victor had to scare him with a rubber snake so we could get him back down. This morning Steph and I raked all the old fruit from the platforms, while the others cut fruit. We then fed everyone some crushed up worm tablets mixed with some multi-vitamin and cod liver oil. You spoon feed it to them, and they actually love it, they gulped it down no problem. Poor old Gelison has had diarrhoea overnight, so he isn't allowed out today.

Once outside we met Salamat (his nickname is Golem because he's anaemic and quite thin). We saw all sorts of antics today, including some sexual ones! In the afternoon it rained quite heavily and there were about ten orangutans out on the platform – who all ran towards us! They hate the rain – and we had to try and pick out our ones from the group! We are slowly getting to know them, but when wild ones frequently join it can get confusing!

I ended up with Chiquita again – and she couldn't wait to get out of the rain. I had to wash her feet with the hose in the doorway as she wouldn't stand out on the log! But once she got inside she was very naughty, escaping three times! She has a habit of being really well behaved, right until you open her cage door, then she reaches underneath and pulls herself away. She is so strong! But I finally managed to get her in! And then I fed her a milk bottle, which she wouldn't give back – until Amoy yelled at her and she handed it straight over – they know not to mess with the rangers!
