Working with Pongo

Today Koko sat with her tummy on the bottom of her cage and used her arms to spin around and around in circles – they are always keen to get out in the morning. I unlocked everyone's cages and escorted Bakut and Maohun outside. Bakut just wants to reach out and grab things and put stuff in his mouth. Maohun is a little angel and just grips on to your leg and is never any trouble. He was the only one that wasn't allowed to climb today – it was tough leaving him in the cage on his own, but he was very good about it. He is so small, and hasn't built up his anti-bodies yet, plus when he has been given an opportunity to go out in the past he has disappeared, and he simply isn't strong enough for that yet, so he needs to be a little bit older before he can join the others.

Outside there is a silver table that the vets use for health checks. Chinta decided to sit on it today and spin around and around on her bum – it is hilarious what antics they get up to. The older orangutans also love to roll to get places – rolling head over heels, over and over again – apparently that is much faster than walking.

Bakut is very close to Alagu – he literally latches on to her back and follows her everywhere. He was not keen to get back in the cage today – so we waited for Alagu to come down and he happily got in once she arrived.

Itinban is a very strange looking male orangutan with a very wrinkly bum who frequently likes to hang out in the baby area. He is truly a very repulsive ape (I call him shitbag as I always forget his real name)! Today he decided to mash up a lot of bananas in his mouth and then spit it all into his hand and keep re-eating it. They are big fans of holding things in their mouths. Alagu likes to do it with milk – and then she spits it everywhere. Yesterday she snatched the bottle from Jack and decided to just tip it all over the floor – she also likes to snatch the bottle from Sepilok if she manages to get close enough to his cage.

Update on the turtle - they tried to release her, but she floated, and wasn't able to dive, so they now believe she has swallowed some plastic. So she is being monitored by the wildlife team at Lankayan. This evening I sat down with a cold Tiger beer. Alcohol is fairly inexpensive here – and a cold drink is just what's required at the end of the day. Our water cooler is only room temperature, and it just doesn't cut it in this heat!
