Working with Pongo

This morning we had to say goodbye to Amoy – she isn't around tonight as she is bridesmaid at a friend's wedding in KK. When she was saying goodbye to some of the others we all hopped into her car and hid. When she discovered us, she drove us for a lap around to the orangutan centre and back. We will miss her!

We headed over to see the orangutans in the morning and afternoon -personally I am trying to savour every second watching their antics! We got to see most of them and were even treated to a visit by Yokmil! He wandered into the outdoor nursery area and then up and along the main boardwalk – so the guys had to keep a close eye on him. But I finally got a picture of this magnificent creature - every other time I had seen him I was working, and didn't have a camera. I got a picture with Dato as well before we left - although not before he insisted on bequeathing me the New York Yankees cap he was wearing!

And now I sit here and write this and look around the room at the empty wardrobe and the full suitcases and I can't quite believe that tomorrow we fly. This experience has truly been one of the most incredible things I've ever done! I treasure every second spent with the staff, fellow volunteers and of course the orangutans themselves - who didn't fail to do anything less than win my affection, and further cement the notion that they are one of the most amazing animals on Earth! It will be tough saying goodbye to the group tomorrow, but I hope we'll keep in touch. Farewell Borneo - until I return...
