S & J's Big Adventure

In August 1973 I stayed at Viareggio for a few days. Spent all of my time on the beach enjoying the water, watching the Italians having fun, putting up my hand when a man in a white coat came along the beach selling pizza, gelato or a cold drink.

There were rows and rows of deck chairs and umbrellas lined up along the beach as far as the eye could see. Today they have all been stored away for the winter. Regardless, we got lucky with the weather and I took off my shoes and walked along the water's edge enjoying that sensation of sand and foam around my ankles.

A few people soaking up the sun and having a swim but generally pretty quiet which we both really, really appreciated. Had lunch in a beach-front cafe then took a back street on our way back to the railway station. Surprised to find one street lined completely with citrus trees. I think they were mandarins but Johnny thought they were lemons. Really, they were too round to be lemons.

You wouldn't think from the weather today that it is only two months away from mid-winter here in this coastal area of Italy. But a lot of the homes and apartments were closed up and deserted for the season. A pity really because it seemed like paradise to me today.

Onward to Rome tomorrow. First priority on arrival there will be to find somewhere to watch "The Game".
