We are staying in the neighbourhood of Aurelio which is next door to the Vatican City. Despite its close proximity to the Vatican and central Rome, it feels far removed from such a bustling metropolis. We are surrounded by a large park (which we think is also part of the Vatican's property portfolio) so it is therefore very quiet and peaceful here.
Allora, today we stayed close to home. We strolled up the street to the top of the hill for lunch at a small cafe which seems to be mostly frequented by locals. This was our third visit and I think the chap behind the counter has become familiar with us because yesterday he
gave us small, complimentary dishes of an unusual salad before our lunch and later he gave us complimentary chocolates. Each time he passed our sidewalk table, he spoke to us and asked us if everything was alright.
That is one thing I am really enjoying about our "free-style" holiday. Because we are spending more than one night here and there, people at the places we return to are very welcoming and treating us more like regulars than one-visit tourists.
After our lunch we strolled through some nearby streets and came across this funny little "green" vehicle. Thought someone was quite imaginative. Then along the street a little further noticed this "green" gate. It won't need trimming any time soon!! These Romans are full of cunning ideas.
We returned to the lovely Villa Magnolia for a little afternoon rest and then ventured down to the bottom of our street, Via Delle Fornaci, and St Peter's to post some more cards from the Vatican's post office.
I San Pietrini Restaurant beckoned so we just had to dine there for a third time. It transpired that one of the waitresses was living in Christchurch when the earthquake struck. She stayed in New Zealand for 8 months and worked in Christchurch and Te Anu. She loved NZ and said that it reminded her of Italy. Again, because we are recognised in this restaurant now we were treated in a most welcoming manner. Prego!
