Peru & Bolivia

We were picked up this morning by the Bolivia Hop bus for our journey back to Peru. We were the first to be picked up and the bus wound through the streets picking people up from their accommodation. We made our way up to El Alto which stands at an altitude of 4000m and looks down over La Paz. It was very busy as on Sundays it has an extensive market, one of the largest in the world. You can buy almost anything from pets to car parts, forklift trucks to rifles.
Once we left the area we went back the way we came crossing on the ferry at the Tequina Straights before arriving in Copacabana. It was nice to see the countryside in the daylight with views of the lake and the mountains. In Copacabana we went on a trip to the Isla del Sol which is one of the largest islands on Titicaca. It is a rocky, hilly island and there are no cars or paved roads. Around 800 families live on the island and farming, fishing and tourism are their livelihood. Over 180 ruins remain on the island most dating to the Inca period around the 15th century AD. In the religion of the Incas, the sun god was believed to have been born here. The boat ride over was quite relaxing and we got off to see the Inca temple. We then got back on the boat although most people did an hour long steep trek to a further point where the boat and us were waiting for them. After the tour we boarded the Bolivia Hop bus again to cross the border and finish the journey to Puno.
