Peru & Bolivia

This morning we started our two day tour of the Colca Canyon.
The Colca Canyon has a depth of 4,160 meters (13,650 ft.) making it the second deepest canyon in the world. The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with pre-Inca rooted inhabitants, towns founded in Spanish colonial times, and still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures who maintain their ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces, called andenes.
Our tour guide Carlos explained the culture of the region as we drove up out of Arequipa, pointing out the volcanoes, especially the one with smoke pouring out. As we got higher we began to see the vicuña, llama and alpacas that inhabit the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. The Patapampa pass at 4910 m, 16,108 ft is the highest point. We made our way to Chivay and after checking into our hotel we went to spend a relaxing hour at the hot springs.
