Peru & Bolivia

We spent today discovering the city of Cusco. The city was the capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th - 16th century Spanish conquest. The Spanish destroyed many Inca buildings, temples and palaces. They used the remaining walls as bases for the construction of a new city, and this stone masonry is still visible. In 1983, Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site.
We went to the plaza and sat for a while watching the activity before going up to the San Blas area. This is an old part of the city with narrow streets and artisan shops. We went into the museum containing artefacts found in excavations and walked up to the church. Unfortunately it was being renovated and surrounded by boarding so we couldn’t see it. We walked back down to the hotel for a rest before going for a meal and preparing for our visit to Machu Picchu tomorrow.
