Peru & Bolivia

We left our hotel early this morning. It was very cold so hats, scarves and gloves were needed. It was still dark with a sky full of stars. Our first stop of the day was Sol de Manana at 4850m to see the geysers and bubbling mud. Next we moved on to the hot springs where it was too cold and early to go in but we dipped our hands in the warm water.
We then went back into the National Reserve and crossed the Salvador Dali desert named because of the resemblance of the landscapes to his surrealist paintings. We eventually came to the Verde Lagoon, the green colour coming from high concentrations of lead, sulphur and calcium carbonate. In the background is the Licancabur volcano at 5960m.
Next we took our travelling companions to the border with Chile at San Pedro as they were continuing their journey from there. It is a popular crossing point for travellers and there were lots of minibuses and land cruisers waiting for their passengers.
We continued our journey by going to the Blanco lagoon which had patches of ice on it. Moving on we came across a 4x4 broken down on a steep part of the road. Lots of cars stopped to help and Harry attempted to tow it but it was too heavy. Luckily another of the land cruisers managed it. Further on we came across another cruiser in the middle of the road that had a flat tyre so no one could get by. All the drivers got out and went to help or watch. At one stage there were around ten men watching!
We stopped for lunch at Villama a small village and then visited the Black lagoon before getting on to the highway to the town of San Cristobal where the silver mines can be seen. Along the way we came across the towed car which now had more problems and also a tanker that had come off the road. Eventually we arrived back in Uyuini where Harry dropped us off at the bus station to catch our overnight bus back to La Paz.It was a very comfortable ride as we had seats that reclined almost flat.
