Day 27 - Washington DC

June 13, 2013

Washington, District of Columbia, United States

This morning we grabbed some bikes and started making our way to the US Capitol building where we took the tour. I was a wee bit disappointed with the tour as you basically only go into two rooms. The tour guide does describe all the statues and paintings in the rooms though which was quite good.

We waiting in line and got to sit in the viewing gallery for the House of Representatives while it was in session. Due to the length of the queue we decided not to got into the Senate Gallery. We made our

way through the tunnel to the Library of Congress. Both these buildings were very big and rather impressive.

Once we had grabbed some lunch we then got some bikes and bikes through the mall to the Jefferson Memorial. The Memorials was the main reason I included Washington DC on my trip and the Jefferson Memorial did not disappoint it is massive and there is something kind of special about the place. I really like the quotes around the walls including: "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".

We were following the water around and came across the Roosevelt Memorial. It seemed to have an area for each of his terms as president. It had many waterfalls and a few different statues and good quotes also.

The next Memorial was for Martin Luther King Jnr. This was a very cool memorial as he was carved out of stone with a quite on the side: "out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope".

We then made it around to the World War II Memorial which was quite a nice memorial that surrounded a big fountain.

We were then making our way to a bike stand so we could walk around the reflecting pool and Lincoln Memorial but it started pouring down and we got absolutely soaked so we ended up walking back to the hotel. Last night on the news I had seen that there were storm earnings and severe weather warnings. It seems that the rain comes in really heavy but doesn't hang around very long.

I'm really liking Washington DC, it has a lot of history and is a very nice city with a lot of greenery and park areas around. Hopefully the weather holds out tomorrow so we can make it to a couple more of the memorials that I want to see. Check in tomorrow and find out.
