A couple of days ago, I had checked in with the good folks at Yukon Yamaha as to how they were doing with the repairs on LiB and they had told me that she was ready for pickup. Today, being a Saturday though, they were closing at 3 pm local time. With about 8 hours of driving ahead of us, losing an hour due to time zone changes and not knowing what the border crossing was going to be like, nor the conditions of the roads, we decided to get an early start while Brian, Jana and Matilda were still resting.
So, we left Tok at the crack of dawn … either that, or 4:22 AM, Alaska Time… we were on the road, and that road was the Alaska Highway between Tok and Whitehorse. This completed our journey of the entire Alaska Highway – we covered all 1422 miles, with 887 of those miles being ridden from south to north and the remaining 535 being ridden from north to south.
We also managed to cover all of the main
paced highways in Alaska, with the exception of the portion of the Richardson Highway (AK4) between Glenallen and Delta Junction.
Along our travels today – the stops were few and far between in our haste to get to Whitehorse before the shop closed – we did manage to see 3 moose (two cows and one bull), a bear, a wolf and a couple of porcupines!
I found this portion of the Alaska Highway to be very scenic, especially the area around Kluane Lake and Kluane National Park. The road, even though it has minimal repairs currently being done, does have a fair number of heaves that you have to watch for, especially if you are on a motorcycle.
We made it into Whitehorse in plenty of time, picked up LiB, got the rental car washed and returned, got LiB washed, checked into the Stratford Hotel (again, creatures of habit) and shortly thereafter, Brian and Jana and Matilda rolled into town.
After everyone got reacquainted, we walked down the street to the Woodcutter’s Blanket to sample some of their craft brews and then over to the Miner’s Daughter for dinner.
For the day, we logged a total of 657 kms for a total to date on the trip of 11,407 km
