Day 34 – Sturgeon Bay, WI to St Ignace, MI

We woke up today to some fairly dense fog, so it’s a good thing that we had decided to do the tour up the peninsula towards Northport last evening instead of trying to do it today – today would not have given us any views worth seeing. It also shortened today by about 150 kms from the original plan.

So, we made our way through Green Bay traffic and just north of GB, we stopped for some breakfast at Blarney’s Café. From there, instead of heading out on Hwy 41, we stayed on the much less busy County Roads through to Oconto and then picked up Hwy 41 just before it changed from a 4 lane to a 2 lane highway. By that time, the skies had cleared and we rode the rest of the day in nice

temperatures and mostly clear skies.

We rode it into Michigan and then picked up M35 all the way to Escanaba where we joined Highway 2, which, after a couple of rest/fuel stops led us to just outside of St Ignace. We stopped at a souvenir shop where you could get a good view of the Mackinac bridge and the bay, and then made our way through town to our hotel.

Our final destination for the night was the same neat motel that we stayed at on our way out – the Bear Cove Inn, with it’s theme rooms – we got the Waterfalls Room while Brian and Jana got the Treetop Room – and it’s gracious hosts (he brought us each out a beer when we were unloading the bikes).

After checking in, we headed up to see Castle Rock – it was on the schedule for our first day, but we missed it because of the rain on that day – and then headed back into downtown St Ignace for dinner at the Driftwood Diner and then took a walking tour of the harbour.

For the day, we logged a total of 507 kms, which included a trip up to Castle Rock and then back into town for dinner and a walking tour of St Ignace, for a total to date on the trip of 17,810 km
