For the first time in a long time, we got up to cloudy skies – with the sun trying to make it’s way through the haze and the smoke (it seems to be all over the north). After grabbing a quick breakfast at the local Timmie’s, we headed out on the Alaska Highway (YT1) retracing our steps for a good chunk of the day, almost into Watson Lake. The heavy duty repair work that we had found on our way
north appears to have been completed, and there were just some dusty sections to have to deal with.
We made pit stops for fuel in Teslin and for a rest at the Continental Divide, and then stopped at Nugget City for fuel and a quick bite to eat before turning directly south onto the BC37, aka the Stewart-Cassiar Highway.
I thoroughly enjoyed riding that today – perhaps because it had been a while since Vicki and I had been on 2 wheels, but mostly, I think, because that road was a very pleasant ride, with tons of scenery and lots of hills, dips and gentle turns. Also, the speed limit being 90 KPH most of the way, meant that as the driver, I could enjoy the scenery without having to worry about someone being on our tail wanting to pass us.
Just after getting on BC37, we noticed a bear cub on the road and then as we got closer, we could see momma bear keeping an eye on her cub from the side of the ditch. Quite a bit later, we did catch a glimpse of another bigger brown bear off to the side of the highway, but it scurried along right after we passed.
Once we got checked into the Northway Motor Inn, we stayed put since they have some ladies come in and put on some dinner – excellent pizza, for example – for the guests and the locals!
For the day, we logged a total of 668 kms for a total to date on the trip of 12,075km
