North to Alaska and Back

Good news! We had the rv serviced this morning and the issue with the tow lights was resolved. We are once again legal!

This was our first two-night stop since we started to travel, so we had some time in the afternoon to explore. Our original plan had been to go to the Edmonton West Mall, the largest in North America, but the day was so beautiful, we went to Elk Island National Park instead.

Elk Island manages Canada’s conservation recovery herds for plains & wood bison . The park is fully fenced. Currently, there are more bison at Elk Island than existed in the whole of North America in 1890.

After a picnic lunch, we drove the Bison Loop Road and were lucky to see a wood bison, the largest land mammal in North America. Both Sandy & Pilgrim went ballistic when they saw the bison, but the bison didn’t seem to care. He was busy scratching his head against a tree.

Next we hiked the beaver pond trail. Jay did pretty well with his cane and old Pilgrim hung in there for the 3.5 km hike. We didn’t see any beavers, but we saw several beaver lodges. We also saw a white pelican, which was a surprise.

Then we walked the short Living Water boardwalk trail. It was more like a floating dock trail and both dogs, but Pilgrim especially, had difficulty managing the spaces between the docks. At the end of the day we had two tired dogs.
