Boya Lake Provincial Park to Iskut, British Columbia
One of our guidebooks says that “words are inadequate to describe the Cassiar Highway.” All I can say is that I have run out of superlatives. I can say the highway has a more intimate feeling to it. The road goes right along the base of mountains or right next to the banks of rivers or lakes. It originally was a combination of logging and mining haul roads. In fact, it still is used for logging as we saw quite a few trucks hauling logs today.
We stopped mid-route at Jade City. Jade City, population of 20 - 30, is really in the middle of nowhere. The only reason to stop there is the Jade Store. Ninety percent of nephrite jade comes from the Cassiar Mountains. The folks at Jade City mine the jade and design jade products.
We drove over two very long and very steep mountains today. To prevent the engine from overheating, we monitored the RPMs, keeping it at 3 or under. The result was that for much of the 2 climbs, we were going at the lightning speed of 20 to 25 MPH.
