We rented a canoe this morning and paddled a 12 mile stretch of the Yukon River from Whitehorse to the confluence of the Takhini River When we started out in Whitehorse, even though the river was as wide as the Susquehanna, the current was quite swift and I was a bit worried. But after a while, the current slowed down and the river narrowed to about the length of a football field. In fact, the current slowed down so much that eventually I started calling the river “Lake Yukon”. We had paddled about 15 minutes when we saw several golden eagles. Other than that, the only wildlife we saw were lots and lots of raucous crows. The banks of the river varied from tall sand

The banks of the river varied from tall sand
cliffs to lodge pole pine-lined beaches. The water was a crystal clear, beautiful turquoise.
Late afternoon, we toured the S.S. Klondike, a restored sternwheeler, powered by wood-fired boilers, that had carried cargo and passengers up the Yukon River. It brought food and equipment to the settlements and mining camps in the Yukon.
Afterwards, we had dinner at Klondike Rib and Salmon. The menu included wild elk stroganoff, venison stew, and bison steak. Jay had delicious smoked ribs and I had equally good fish (halibut) and chips. All was good until we decided to split the sourdough bread pudding for dessert. The portion was HUGE. OMG, enough for at least six people!
