We still had 66 miles to go on the Top of the World Highway. The guidebook said that this portion of the highway was newly reconstructed, so we expected the road to be better than yesterday. It was, but not by much. It took us one hour to drive the first 26 miles. The final 40 miles were somewhat better.
When we turned onto the Glenn Highway, we had about 190 more miles to drive. The road was paved, so we had high expectations, too high, however. Long sections of the road were under construction. In addition, due perhaps to the permafrost, much of the road was wavy, like the wake of a boat. These waves are no big deal if you are driving a car, but for a motor home towing a car, it means watching out and slowing down or driving around each one. We frequently encountered the following signs along the way: road damage, rough road, loose gravel, dip, bump, reduce speed, be prepared to stop & pilot car follow me. On the plus side, we did have beautiful views of the Wrangell Mountains and the Copper River. We stopped at the Wrangell-St. Elias visitor center at Copper Centre & then continued another 30 min. to our campground at Kenny Lake.
