Day 3
Thursday, June 22, 2017
Today we drove about 220 miles to a KOA northwest of Chicago. The traffic as we drove around Chicago was stressful to say the least.
The KOA is located next to an attraction called “Wild West Town”. Periodically, through out the afternoon, we heard shots from gun fights and the whistle of the mini train.
It was a blistering 89 degrees when we arrived, so we waited until after dinner to walk the dogs around the campground.
Day 4
Friday, June 23, 2017
It was an easy driving day, 185 miles, to the Oakdale KOA, north of the Wisconsin Dells.
We got settled at our site and then headed for Mill Bluff State Park, just 7 miles away.
According to the “Wisconsin Official Marker”, “ Mill Bluff is one of many isolated and rocky castle-like hills which rise abruptly from the surrounding plain. This formation is properly called a mesa if large and a butte if small.”
At the park we did two short hikes. The first was Camels Bluff Trail, a 1.25 mile loop trail that goes past formations called Devils Monument, Camels Bluff and Cleopatra’s Needle (pictured). It was a beautiful day, sunny, about 75 degrees with a nice breeze. It would have been a very nice hike, except for the horrible, HORRIBLE, deer flies!!! I used a branch with dried leaves on it to shush the flies from my head as well as from poor Sandy. Jay was fortunate in that he had worn a hat, which helped a lot.
Our second hike, Mill Bluff Trail, which looped around the bluff, was a lovely hike. It was just a short drive from the other hike, but luckily, no deer flies!
