We started the day by touring Fort Battleford National Historic Site, which was conveniently located adjacent to our campground. We used our Canada park pass for admission and for a grand total of six US dollars, we opted for a private guided tour of the site.
From 1876 to 1924 the fort served as a post for the North-West Mounted Police. The Fort was located in the heart of Cree (First Nation tribe) country. In 1885 there was an uprising of the Cree and the fort was the base for military operations and also gave refuge to the 400 plus settlers until the uprising was settled.
Having a guided tour really made all the difference in the world. Our guide explained the events of the uprising and provided additional insight into the operations at the fort as we toured the restored buildings. One of the interesting buildings was a stable for sick horses. Turns out that many of the horses the Mounties brought became sick because of the sage that grew in the fields.
After the tour, we filled the motor home with gas and drove approximately 260 miles to Stony Plain, which is just west of Edmonton, Alberta. The price of gas had been running about $2.10 to $2.25 per gallon in the US. As expected, as we traveled farther north in Canada the price of gas increased. Our last fill up cost $2.91 per gallon.
