We drove about 100 miles for an overnight stay near the small town of Talkeetna. This is the town that many considered to be the inspiration for the tv show “Northern Exposure.” The quirky town has a cat named Stubbs as honorary mayor.
Talkeetna definitely has a touristy feel to it. The main street is lined with restaurants, shops, lodging, and outfitters. The outfitters offer a wide variety of adventures: flight seeing, river rafting, jet boat tours, zip lines, sport fishing, guided hikes, off-road ATV, gold panning, and wilderness photography. The buildings are mostly renovated cabins from the mining days.
It was a gorgeous day and the town was quite busy. We strolled along Main Street, taking in the sights and doing a little souvenir shopping. Then we relaxed on the deck of a little café and enjoyed local beer and cider as we did some people watching.
We ended the afternoon by driving a few miles out of town to a small operation that makes birch syrup. We learned that it takes 110 gallons of birch sap to make one gallon of birch syrup, compared to 60 gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. The syrup was tasty but expensive.
