We gotbup relatively early. Packed our bags as we had to fheck out of our rooms for the night. We kept what we needed for the trek and the rest went into storage. We had a good breakfast. I had a lemon and sugar pancake. dominic still not feeling great. He was sick the night before so stuck to water. Wishnu came along about 8.30 andoff we went. He was our guide for the next 2 days. Before we evdn got to the official entrance of gueneng leuser national park we had to climb up a big hill. Finlay was sweating buckets already.. The jungle here is under conservation so you can't enter without a permit.
There was a snake in a tree before we even entered. We startedtrekking in the jungle and it wasnt long before we saw an orangutan and its baby. It was amazing. We watched taht one for a while and then more tourists appeared so we moved on. it wasnt long before we saw some more. And then we saw a really big male.there were quite a few groups so we would always end up at the same place. It was such fun to see them playing in the trees. After we had trekked down and up a hill finlay was too knackered and sweatingso needed a break. He stayed with andy and Wishnu said he said we were just going 200 m or so. Well about 200 metres we saw a huge peacock just on this log stranded in front of us. we managed to get about 5metres near it until it strolled off. We then walked another 5 mins or so and Wishnu saidto uswait here he will be back in a sec. Well that sec went on and on. After about 15 mins we were getting a bit anxious as we didnt know where he was and there is 1 very agressive orangutan who lives in that area of the jungle called meena. We followed his route til we got to a clearing and waited about another 5 mins when he appeared thank goodness. He took us down a very steep hilland ecwere greeted with another orangutan and her baby also some thomas leaf monkeys. These monkeys are very gentle and will take bananas from you. We even got to touch it and the boys put some in their mouth and thelittle monkey took it with their mouths. It was very sweet. We stopped for a late lunch by a river and dominichad a little nap. He was still quite weak and couldn't face eating. As it looked like rain cominig anf finlay was knackered and dominic not a 100 percent we would walk a little by the river. There wss still some up and down though and it wss very slippery. My knees were knackered by the end. We crossed the river atone point, on a little pulley cart, jungle style.
We got to ouf camp late afternoon by the river tired but very happy what we had seen. Our home for the night wss a bit of black polythene put over some poles and a thermarest with no air, as was broken on a very hard dried mud surface.
Dominic lah down immediately but we went for a swim. there were guys there cooking already for our supper.
We had some coffee first and sat in the tubes we were to use tomorrow. Wishnu came along with lots of magic tricks and logic puzzles. Supper came not long after dark. Cant mention it at the mo as it all cameup later so not a good memory!
It was spitting with rain and we were all tired anc there was notjing to sit on so we decided to go to sleep listening to the river and jungle signs.
Bukit lawang day 4 trek
Must have woken about midnight not feeling too great. My tummy felt odd. The bed was bloody hard too. I kept trying to go to sleep to ignore it and hoping it would go away. But i felt sicker and sicker. about 5.30 i got up and dinner cameup. Havent managed to eat any indonesian food again. Poor marcus got up at the same time and witnessed it all. I felt very weak now but was determined it wasnt going to stop me doing anything, but i couldnt look at food without retching. But i still managed to continue.
I sat in a tyre hoop drinking water and hoping it would all stay down. Breakfast was being served up but i kept well away.
About 10am we set off across the river. jackie the oranggutan was on the rocks waiting for fruit!! could haget really close which i didnt reall approve of. I had trouble crossing with the flow but Finlay held on to me. We then walked up to a waterfall and all the others went into the fall. It was a very good massage apparently.
We stayed around there for quite a while. Marcus skimming stones. Dominic was feeling much better today which was good. We then headed back to camp to get our stuff packed up as we had decided to skip lunch and go back to Junia Guesthouse. Our rzft was ready, lots of inner tubes were already tied together. We put our gezr into waterproof bags tied them to the raft anf we got on the tubes. It took us about 45 mins to get back to junia and considering my circumstances it was still quite exhilerating.
I was glad to get back to our room and a nice comfy bed. I did nothing for the r3st of the day but doze.
