Roseland Peninsular

Portscatho , 06.02.2021

Stayed for 5 nights at Merrose Farm, CAMC club site tactically selecting pitch 14 for optimum sun at beer o’clock; west facing with no trees to shade us..

The area is stunning and much “softer” than north Cornwall (says me like a proper Poldarkian, never been to Cornwall!). The Roseland is very pretty, with lovely green lanes & footpaths abundant with wild flowers.

The coastline is lovely, with fabulous little coves and sandy, dog friendly beaches. In the sunshine, which we were lucky to see for most of our time here, the sea was cobalt blue and crystal clear. On a walk toward St Anthony Head we watched some seals bobbing about in the sea. With the sun out, we could easily have been in the Caribbean again.

From the site it’s 10 minutes down a track, past a farm shop, to the coast path then just under 2 miles to Portscatho past Porthbean Beach, the very busy “Hidden Hut” and then the popular Porthcurnick beach. Portscatho is charming, but felt less a community and more holiday homes, shame really. Nonetheless we liked it. Never tried the Plume of Feathers pub as all tables outside full.

The coast beyond this is even better I thought, with quiet little white sand coves and even bluer, clearer sea. Loved our walk on Thursday using this route to the Place Ferry and over to St Mawes. Friday saw us walking the other direction to Nare Head, up to Veryan and back toward the coast via ice cream at the 16th century Mellinsey Mill. A challenging walk with good climbs, pretty paths and stunning view. Daisy was in her element in and out the stream we followed downhill.

We arrived here to sea fret, and leave on an overcast day, the in between “important” bit has been excellent & I’m sure we’ll be back!
