A lesson from Winston and a visit to our second home

Woodstock/Milford on Sea, 06.28.2021

A leisurely journey to Woodstock for a favourite and regular stopover for this much travelled route at Bladon Chains CAMC site. The site has a great location at the edge of Blenheim Palace and within walking distance of Woodstock. Shame it closes in September to make way for the Estate to build Butlins glampling pods. Had a pleasant walk across the Blenheim Park visiting the Column of Victory, built in 1727 to commerate the Earl of Marlborough’s victories apparently. It may be fitting for England beating Germany tomorrow..

A scenic 5 mile walk through the Blenheim Estate bought us back to Bladon, where Winston Churchill is buried and also to the White House Inn where legend has it he learned to drink. Now a community owned pub, we thought we should have a lesson ourselves.

The Monday bought a pleasant commute down to a much visited and loved haunt of ours, Milford on Sea. The sun has come out, blue skies calling for us to do little more than sit in the sunshine before we stroll down to The Wash House for a few late afternoon beers.

Our site for the next few days would not be our usual choice, bit too commercial and mixed camping with pre school little people (better suited to Thornwick Bay as Father in Law would have said) but the location is great for us. Hopefully tonight will be fairly peaceful, more later..

Went to The Wash House where we got a nice warm welcome back from Ella, felt like we’re locals. Enjoyed a few pre- dinner pints, and initially pleasant to chat to a couple in there before the, frankly seemingly bigoted chap as it turned out, expressed his unpleasant views on LGBT, tattoos and race without knowing a first thing about us made us squirm, wish we’d had the courage to

call him out. He’d no idea or respect of our story. As more beers flowed he also got a little too close for Covid and Mrs H’s personal space comfort…harmless, just one of life’s characters.
