We finally arrived to Singapore airport about 7:30am. We managed a few hours of solid sleep on the flight, as well as a couple of naps however we knew the jetlag would hit us this afternoon.
We got through the usual airport business and jumped on the very handy train network which quickly brought us to our accommodation. We dumped our bags and changed into some cooler clothes because oh my goodness, the Singapore heat and humidity hit us like a tonne of bricks!!!
We grabbed ourselves a coffee from the nearby 7 eleven and then decided to tick off the number one attraction in Singapore… Gardens by the bay. The gardens were so incredible, probably exactly what we expected but equally as beautiful. Not going to lie though, we were already struggling with the heat and also probably a little bit of jetlag!
We spent a couple of hours there and then by about 11:30am we’d decided we were feeling a bit peckish and would head into one of the huge Hawker Halls which we’d heard so much about. We chose to go to Lau Pau Hawker Centre which was HUGE and nothing like we expected. At a guess, I would say there was 60 stalls all selling something different – very overwhelming. As we walked in there was one stall with a line out the door, a very cheap menu and some delicious looking food… we took note but continued on looking around. We quickly decided that we should probably be on the back of the line and so we headed back to try out their food. We got separate mixed meals so we could share and overall, it was very delicious and made us both SO excited to be in the world of Asian food. We couldn’t get access to our room until 2pm so we decided to continue our little city tour and head to the famous Merlion Sculpture which is along the river. We took a few photos there and then continued our walk along the river and back to our hostel, despite it still being earlier than 2pm we were so desperate to lay horizontal. It was about 1:30pm when we finally got into our room and after clocking up 20,000 steps already, we were desperate to do absolutely nothing for a few hours. We were quite determined not to nap, knowing it would really stuff up our jetlag however like I said, we were sooo exhausted and after 20 minutes of laying on our phones we decided we’d have a 30 minute nap with the light on, to hopefully get us through the next 5 hours of the afternoon/evening. We woke after our 30 minute nap feeling SO much better however we were still hoping it wouldn’t ruin our sleep tonight. We had a quiet afternoon doing not much before we decided to head out to a nearby shopping centre for a walk. We grabbed ourselves a coke each and then enjoyed our guilty pleasure of looking around the supermarket!!
We continued our walk towards the Maxwell Hawker Food Centre which had come highly recommended and so we’d planned to grab dinner there tonight. Unfortunately though, we arrived to the centre closed with a big sign out the front saying they were closed for Spring Cleaning for the exact dates we were staying in Singapore. Devastating however we were close to the centre we’d been at for lunch and so we decided to head there instead. Another highly recommended experience was the satay nights at the hawker centres, and so we decided we’d do that tonight instead. If I’m completely honest, it is probably a bit of a tourist trap as we spent about $20 AUD on not even one full meal between the two of us, however it was a great experience. We grabbed some chicken, beef and prawns which we dipped into a delicious homemade satay sauce. Feeling not particularly full and after spending a fortune (for Singapore!!), we headed inside where we grabbed a dumpling soup to share. It was so delicious, so big and just $6AUD.
By now it was about 9:30pm (we were feeling very grateful for our nap!) and decided to make our way back to the accomodation. We stumble upon McDonalds signs advertising 50cent soft serve cones and we knew that’d be a great way to cool us down before bed. We grabbed ourselves one each and headed home, tucked up and both SOUND asleep by 11pm after a huge 24 hours and over 30,000 steps.
